Paul's instruction in 1 Thessalonians is careful about its preposition. Give thanks in everything — not for everything. The difference has mattered a great deal to people who have been told to be grateful for things that were genuinely terrible.
The psalms approach gratitude as memory rather than mood. Forget not all his benefits assumes that forgetting is the natural drift, and that thankfulness is the deliberate act of recalling.
James adds an unexpected note: that every good gift comes from a Father in whom there is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. The gratitude in view there is less about counting blessings than about the constancy of their source.
