Paul's answer in 2 Corinthians is the strangest verse in this collection, and the most quoted. He asked three times to have a weakness removed. The answer was no. What he received instead was a sentence about grace being sufficient — and he then says he will glory in the very thing he wanted taken away.

That reversal runs through most of these passages. Isaiah does not promise that the weary will stop being weary; he promises renewed strength to those who wait, which is itself an exercise in weakness. Nehemiah locates strength in joy rather than in effort.

Philippians 4:13 is worth reading with its neighbours. Paul has just described learning contentment in hunger and in plenty. The all things he can do through Christ is, in context, the endurance of circumstances he cannot change — not the achievement of whatever he sets his mind to.

Lo que recibió fue una frase sobre la gracia que basta, y luego dice que se gloriará precisamente en aquello que quería que le quitaran.

Ese giro atraviesa casi todos estos pasajes. Isaías no promete que el cansado deje de cansarse; promete nuevas fuerzas a los que esperan, y esperar es ya un ejercicio de debilidad. Nehemías ubica la fuerza en el gozo, no en el esfuerzo.

Vale leer Filipenses 4:13 junto a sus vecinos. Pablo acaba de describir que aprendió a contentarse con hambre y con abundancia. El todo que puede en Cristo es, en su contexto, soportar circunstancias que no puede cambiar, no lograr cualquier cosa que se proponga.
