Forgiveness in the Gospels is uncomfortable because it is never presented as optional. Matthew 6 puts the two directions in one breath: forgive and you will be forgiven; withhold it and it is withheld. Jesus offers no exception clause, which has troubled readers for two thousand years.
Peter's question in Matthew 18 is an attempt to find the limit. Seven times felt generous; rabbinic custom suggested three. The answer he gets — seventy times seven — is not a higher number so much as a refusal to count.
It is worth saying plainly what these verses do not say. None of them instructs anyone to return to a person who is harming them, or to call harm something other than harm. Forgiveness and reconciliation are treated separately throughout scripture, and confusing them has done real damage.

El perdón en los Evangelios incomoda porque nunca se presenta como opcional. Mateo 6 pone las dos direcciones en una sola frase: perdona y serás perdonado; retenlo y se te retiene. Jesús no ofrece cláusula de excepción, y eso ha inquietado a los lectores durante dos mil años.
La pregunta de Pedro en Mateo 18 busca el límite. Siete veces le parecía generoso; la costumbre rabínica sugería tres. La respuesta que recibe — setenta veces siete — no es tanto un número mayor como una negativa a llevar la cuenta.
Conviene decir con claridad lo que estos versículos no dicen. Ninguno manda volver junto a quien te está haciendo daño, ni llamar al daño otra cosa. La Escritura trata el perdón y la reconciliación por separado, y confundirlos ha causado mucho mal.
