The marriage passage people quote at weddings — charity suffereth long, and is kind — was not written about weddings. Paul sent it to a fractious congregation in Corinth that was arguing about status and spiritual gifts. It works at a wedding because it was written for people who were finding each other difficult.
Ephesians is the passage most often lifted out of shape. Paul tells husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself for it — a comparison whose weight falls on self-giving rather than authority. Peter's instruction, that a husband's prayers may be hindered by how he treats his wife, is blunter than most sermons make it.
Ecclesiastes brings something the romantic passages don't: the plain practicality of two people being better than one, because when one falls the other lifts him up.

Efesios es el texto que más se saca de forma. Pablo manda a los maridos amar a sus mujeres como Cristo amó a la iglesia y se entregó a sí mismo por ella: una comparación cuyo peso cae en entregarse, no en mandar. La instrucción de Pedro, que las oraciones del marido pueden estorbarse por cómo trata a su mujer, es más directa de lo que suelen decir los sermones.
Eclesiastés aporta algo que no dan los textos románticos: la practicidad sencilla de que dos son mejor que uno, porque si uno cae el otro lo levanta.
